From the Archives: Mother s Day founder envisioned a day of reverence, not commercial exploitation

Print Mother’s Day is celebrated on the second Sunday in May because over a century ago a daughter in Philadelphia wished to honor her own mother and grandmother and worked to set aside a day to celebrate motherhood everywhere. Anna Jarvis in 1908 succeeded in convincing others to wear a white carnation in honor of mothers. By 1912 San Diego Mother’s Day was being celebrated in San Diego. It was established as a federal holiday in 1914. A relative of Jarvis told the Union in 1926 that the founder believed the day should be devoted to reverence for mothers and for the memories of mothers who have died and not be “excuse for any commercial or charitable appeal for funds.”

Del s Truck - Canada s History

Del s Truck Del loved his truck and liked to let other people use it. Until the day when a newcomer scooped it out from under his nose. Illustrated by Alice RL; written by Guuduniia LaBoucan Posted August 29, 2018 Del’s truck was a beauty. It was a Ford 150 LTX extended cab, super camper special, vintage 1979. Brown with a broad yellow stripe down the side. Del lovingly referred to it as the Nanaimo Bar. He drove it all over and used it for hunting and fishing, and when the winter came he hauled firewood. He left the keys in it and anyone who needed wheels could borrow it. It would come back with a little more or a little less gas. Del liked sharing his truck; it made him a rich man.
