The Expanse has proven a success in the sci-fi community, going on to have five seasons. The Amazon Prime series is set hundreds of years in the future where humans have colonized the solar system with people living on Earth, Mars and the Belt. With humans taking over more of the solar system, this, in turn, has led to problems both from other humans and aliens.

After a bleak year in entertainment, science fiction fans finally have some good news with “The Expanse” starting its fifth season on Amazon. Those unfamiliar with the show may consider watching the previous seasons, and those who have seen those may want to review what happened.
After four seasons, “The Expanse” is poised to take its place among the best sci-fi on television, combining the political intrigue and complexity of “Babylon 5” with the gritty realism of “Battlestar Galactica.” While it delves into deeper themes of class, community, the limits and potential of technology, and man’s place in the universe, it has resisted the pitfalls of leftist moralizing or progressive utopianism one usually finds in popular science fiction (like most of the “Star Trek” series).

The Expanse’s Camina Drummer (Cara Gee) and Chrisjen Avasarala (Shohreh Aghdashloo) may never cross paths; Drummer captains a salvage crew in the Belt, while diplomat Avasarala watches out for Earth. But the characters have some crucial traits in common, like the fact that they’re both total badasses.
The Expanse Star Shohreh Aghdashloo on Chrisjen s Need to Let Go of Power and Earth s Uncertain Fate TheWrap 12/21/2020
(MILD SPOILERS ahead for the first three episodes of The Expanse, Season 5.)
Chrisjen Avasarala, played with profanity-laden glory by the always excellent Shohreh Aghdashloo, has long been one of the prime movers of The Expanse. But as we meet her again at the start of Season 5, the former UN Secretary-General is at one of the low points of her career even if Amos still thinks she s Queen of Earth.
After failing to win a bitter election in Season 4, Chrisjen has been demoted to a minor advisory role heading up the United Nations offices on Luna (the moon to us normies). And though she s still a high-ranking government official, new Secretary-General Nancy Gao frequently makes it clear Chrisjen is, at best, being tolerated rather than included in the new government.
