Wisdom and encouragement from Ypsilanti’s mentoring barber goes mobile

Now, the Ypsilanti-based barber is taking his haircuts and mentoring on the road.
Griffin, who’s been cutting hair in the Ypsilanti area for more than 20 years, has earned a reputation as a mentor - particularly to young Black boys - by offering discounted haircuts to kids who read while they’re in his barber’s chair.
While his discount - $2 off a haircut or $2 to the child - has created a buzz for his business, Griffin has had to adapt during the coronavirus pandemic.
He’s shut down the brick-and-mortar location for Griff’s Unlimited Cutz and rebranded as Griff’s Mobile Barbering Service, bringing his barber kit to people’s homes for a $5 traveling fee. Pivoting during the pandemic hasn’t distracted Griffin from his ongoing mission of mentoring children, but he said it has put his clients at ease as they don’t have to leave their house.
