Prince George Free Press » Tourney features kabaddi competition

Indian culture was on full display at Masich Place Stadium on the weekend as crowds gathered to watch and participate in the Third Annual Punjabi Sports Tournament. The two-day competition ran Saturday and Sunday and featured a variety of activities, free food and award presentations. Highlighting the various competitions was Kabaddi, a popular international sport combining the characteristics of wrestling and rugby which originated in the South Asia region. “This tournament is about Kabaddi,” said Ranjit Rarru, who participated on a Prince George mills team. “It’s played all over the world. It’s a very popular game.” Rarru’s team fell short in the competition, losing in the semifinals. The Young Club took home the top prize of $1,000 after defeating ITM Trucking in the final.
