It is not a good time to  be young in this country

Daily Monitor Sunday March 14 2021 My earliest recollection of a clash between civilians and the security forces is of an evening journey that was interrupted at the junction where Rubaga Road leaves Namirembe Road near the former Pride Theatre in Kampala.  I was in the company of my father when we were stopped at a roadblock. This was the mid-80s and I have come to believe that there was no real reason for the stop because of what the man at the roadblock said to my father.  He demanded to see my identification. I was but a little girl, barely out of nursery school. In fact, we were on the way home, my father from work and I from school. To date, it is one of the most ridiculous things anyone has said to me.

Kiyega built Esom School of Music from scratch

Daily Monitor Saturday January 09 2021 A random search of music schools in Uganda will quickly land you on Esom School of Music as one of the top results. Founded 15 years ago, owners say it generates more than Shs500m annually from their services. Rewind to April 2006: Eternity Source of Music (Esom) was founded by Daniel  Innocent Kiyega on a trial and error basis with an initial investment of Shs700,000. He knew what he wanted to do but was not sure of how to do it. “Looking back, I cannot imagine I have come this far,” Kiyega says. Firstly, the school needed a leader, who could bear the vision of teaching music aligned with international innovations in music teaching. Kiyega, who had just returned from South Africa where he had obtained a Diploma in Music, had two money-making options on his mind to open a restaurant or follow his dream of a music school.
