ST. GEORGE Dixie State University has opened up a survey to the public to provide input to the university s Name Recommendation Committee, said Dixie State University officials.
The survey comes after Utah Gov. Spencer Cox recently signed the Dixie State name change bill after the Legislature passed it with some reluctance. Some legislators worried that the name change amounted to cancel culture while others pointed to the negative connotation of the term Dixie could hold. The Utah Senate voted 26-3 in favor of the first substitute HB278, and the House of Representatives re-voted after the substitution with a 48-23 vote.

ST. GEORGE, Utah â Dixie State University will open a public survey Thursday as the university moves forward in its name exploration process. The survey is a way for the [Name Recommendation Committee] to collaborate with residents of southwestern Utah, institutional partners and university faculty, staff, students and alumni, as the Utah State Legislature outlined in House Bill 278S01, Name Change Process for Dixie State University, a news release from DSU says.
The survey, which will close on April 13, will ask public participants to rank factors and themes for the new name and provide a place for new suggestions not already included in the survey.

Avoiding Another COVID-19 Surge
Utah’s COVID-19 rates have come down dramatically in the past couple of months, but medical experts warn the state isn’t out of the woods yet. Infectious disease expert Dr. Andrew Pavia said new variants of the virus are circulating in the state, and those appear to be more transmissible. To avoid another surge, Pavia said Utahns should keep wearing masks and social distancing. The state department of health reported 514 new cases of the disease Wednesday. Pavia said Utah should be aiming for 100 cases a day or fewer.
