Fazal Karim Miah, sitting MLA from Tufanganj in Cooch Behar district of West Bengal is upset.
He had won the seat in 2016 as TMC candidate by securing over 44 per cent of the votes.
But this time, he has been denied the party ticket.
In the place of Fazal, the party has nominated a Hindu candidate, Pranab Kumar Dey.
“I will give up politics”, Fazal said when contacted over the phone.
TMC Cooch Behar district general secretary Jalil Ahmed admitted that the party’s decision to not field any Muslim candidate from the district had not gone down well with supporters from the minority community. They are demanding that at least one Muslim candidate from any of district’s four unreserved assembly constituencies should be put up as an independent candidate.
BJP leaders in many south Bengal districts are facing a challenge they dare not publicly admit meeting the party’s stiff target of over 50,000 people per district to the Brigade Parade Grounds in Calcutta for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Sunday rally.
On Saturday evening, many BJP leaders on the ground admitted without wanting to be named that meeting such targets were “practically impossible” from areas with a substantial minority population and where the party’s organisational strength is poor.
These apart, there are smaller yet significant hurdles. For instance, BJP workers said that in districts such as East Burdwan and Hooghly, many supporters are farmers busy with potato harvesting.
