As Australian Fashion Week kicks off, the Australian fashion industry says it generates $27.2 billion annually and employs 489,000 workers – 77 per cent of them women.
AFC outlines 2-step plan for $1 million grant

The Australian Fashion Council (AFC) has been awarded a $1 million grant from the Department of Industry, Science, Energy and Resources (DISER).
The grant will be used to fund a two-step project which will first; establish a clear identity and trademark for Australian fashion brands to heighten demand and awareness of Australian fashion both domestically and overseas; and, second; will work to create more local manufacturing.

Ragtrader, AFC CEO Leila Naja Hibri said the first phase is focused on heightening the profile of Australia s vibrant fashion industry. The idea was that we need to as an industry, identify Australian fashion, in terms of branding, brand positioning, and messaging.

The federal government is investing $1 million in the Australian fashion industry in a bid to promote locally designed and produced products to overseas markets.
The Australian Fashion Council will receive the funding and use it to fuel a local and international campaign that promotes Australian fashion, and an industry roadmap for the next decade.
In the budget, the investment was described to support the “growth of the Australian fashion industry by promoting demand creation and increased recognition of the innovation and design capabilities in Australian fashion”.
Christian Porter, Minister for Industry, Science and Technology said in a statement that the $1 million investment would fund the development of an Australian fashion certification trademark.
