While doing so, they created jobs, supported a wide range of initiatives as part of the Lake Placid Business Association, and provided locals, seasonal residents and visitors a great place to shop. Ruthie’s Run is closing largely because the Johnstons haven’t been able to find someone to take the business, a challenge that’s being replicated throughout the North Country as more and more business owners are getting ready to retire.

Doing so, they believe nonprofits will reap the benefits of increased outcomes in direct services, capacity building and in the public sphere. The Council’s push for increasing diversity in nonprofit management and programming did not start with the public’s shock of witnessing George Floyd’s 8-minute slow death on social media and press on May 25, 2020. However, there is no question that it and other recent brutal assaults have heightened the urgency to expand opportunities within the nonprofit sector.

The 24th annual Great Backyard Bird Count was held from Feb. 12 to 15, organized by the National Audubon Society and various partner agencies. Whether people count them at their bird feeder, standing in a frozen marshy meadow or hiking up Cascade Mountain, the birds people identify help researchers determine how bird populations are holding up, shifting about, and being impacted by changes to their habitat. The best-known birder around the Olympic Region (Lake Placid and Keene) is Larry Master, who has been intensely interested in all living creatures since he was about 8, living in a suburb outside Philadelphia. At the time, Larry had three assets: a bird feeder outside his window; nearby fields, marshes and woods; and a mother who tossed him outside with instructions to be back in time for dinner. (Photo provided) Not many high school biology teachers suggest their students try the sport of bobsledding, but Maddy Cohen’s teacher Matt Roy at Northwood School did just that. This past week, the 2020 Lake Placid High School graduate and current first-year student at the University of Vermont, 17-year-old Maddy of Keene Valley participated as the youngest athlete in the International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation’s North American Cup. Held at the Mount Van Hoevenberg track, placing sixth the first day in the monobob and fifth the second day.
