Parashat Terumah תרומה: A Labor of Love | Martin Sinkoff

Terumah (and the rest of the book of Exodus) continues the “how to” manual that we opened last week in Mishpatim with its list of laws.  Terumah and the succeeding chapters deal with the building of the sanctuary and the establishment of the calendar.  The sanctuary is sacred space; the calendar delineates sacred time. As Rabbi Nahum Sarna points out, we need sacred deeds, sacred space and sacred time, in order to live moral lives.  The relative brevity of the revelation of the Ten Commandments at Sinai (parashat Yitro) and the relative length of the text relating to laws and the building of the sanctuary are

Parashat Yitro יתרו: The Ten Commandments | Martin Sinkoff

Rabbi Nahum Sarna calls this parasha the “hinge of the Torah” because it contains the revelation of the Ten Commandments at Sinai (and so to each of us everytime we read it). In popular imagination, the Ten Commandments were given to the Israelites on tablets of stone.  True and not true.  The first revelation came to us by “voice”, in words, as is clear in this chapter.  And this is critical to understanding the The Commandments themselves:  they are written in stone but can only be understood when we listen. They, by themselves, are inert. Our human capacity to listen, to learn, to understand and, ultimately, to act, brings them to life and into our lives.

Parasha Beshallach בשלח: The Long and Winding Road | Martin Sinkoff

Cecil B. Demille’s 1956 movie, “The Ten Commandments”, it is impossible to remove the image of the red sea rising up to the left and right like sides of steep cliffs allowing the Israelites to pass along dry land as if they were at the bottom of a canyon.  The parting of those waters and the departure of the Israelites from Egypt is the major subject of this chapter. Here are the passages in the text that speak to me (this year): 1. Now when Pharaoh let the people go, God did not lead them by way of the land of the Philistines, although it was nearer; for God said, “The people may have a change of heart when they see war, and return to Egypt.” So God led the people roundabout, by way of the wilderness at the Sea of Reeds. Now the Israelites went up armed out of the land of Egypt. (EX 13:17-18)
