Afghanistan: Weekly Humanitarian Update (10 – 16 May 2021) Format South: Fighting continued with civilian displacement The security situation in the south was assessed to be calmer compared to the previous week though military operations were reported before and after the three-day Eid holiday ceasefire. Despite the ceasefire, several improvised explosive device (IED) attacks and armed clashes were reported which affected civilians and humanitarian activities. In Kandahar province, armed clashes were reported in Shah Wali Kot, Arghestan, Panjwayi, Maywand and Zheray districts. According to initial reports, 3,500 people from Maywand district were displaced to Kandahar city due to fighting. On 13 May, seven civilians including children were reportedly killed and two people were wounded when an IED hit a vehicle in Maywand Bazar and Panjwayi district.

Violence Reported in 15 Provinces as Ceasefire Ends Shortly after the end of the three-day ceasefire, fighting escalated in at least 15 provinces since the early hours of Sunday. The Defense Ministry said that the Taliban violated the ceasefire in 21 provinces and that 21 civilians were killed and 33 more were wounded in their attacks during the three days of Eid ( May 13 to 15).   But the Taliban has denied violating the ceasefire. Abdul Zahir Atal, the police chief of Dawlatshah district in Laghman, died of wounds sustained in a clash with the Taliban in the province on Sunday, a local official said.  “Dawlatshah district has been faced with a tough security situation over the last seven months and there has been no attention to it,” said Mohammad Farooq Watanyar, a resident of Laghman.

EPA-EFE/FILE/WATAN YAR At least 106 Taliban fighters have been killed and another 37 injured over the last 24 hours in a counterattack by the security forces in Afghanistan s southwestern Helmand province in response to an ongoing large-scale attack by the insurgents since the weekend. The counter attack by Afghan ground troops and air forces is underway in the outskirts of the capital city of Lashkargah, and the districts of Nahr-e-Saraj, Nawa and Garamsir, where hundreds of Taliban have clashed with the security forces. In the aftermath of the counter-attack, 106 Taliban fighters including their eight commanders were killed and 37 were injured in the past 24 hours, the Ministry of Defense said in a statement Tuesday.
