BHOPAL: Crematoriums here claim that the last rites of as many as 2557 coronavirus victims from Bhopal district were performed in April, sharply contradicting the BJP-led state government s data which puts the COVID-19 deaths in the district last month at 104.
The mammoth mismatch has given credence to claims of massive under-reporting of COVID-19 fatalities in the city.
Madhya Pradesh is undercounting Covid deaths?
Crematoriums and graveyards in the capital Bhopal alone are reporting more deaths than the government is for the entire state.

India is grappling with a brutal new wave of the coronavirus pandemic. It counted 2,75,196 new infections on April 18 and 1,620 deaths. Alarming as these numbers are, they are widely suspected to be undercounted.
Indeed, news reports in the past week have revealed that several states are reporting fewer deaths than are taking place. One such state is Madhya Pradesh.
To check if the state is really undercounting Covid deaths, we visited the two main cremation grounds in the capital Bhopal and the largest graveyard this past week. The city has at least 10 cremation grounds and 12 large and small graveyards.

The last rites of 108 people were performed according to coronavirus protocol in Bhopal on Thursday, according to records maintained by crematoriums and graveyards and officials working there, the number far higher than the Madhya Pradesh government’s claim on Covid-19 fatalities that day.
The government had said only eight persons had died of the infection in Bhopal district on Thursday.
According to the records with two crematoriums and a graveyard, the last rites of 156 people were performed on Thursday in the state capital. Of them, 108 were coronavirus-infected, the documents showed.
