asking federal agencies to find the money for border security. that is, in fact, taxpayer money. if you ask economists, the new nafta trade deal is not going to result in more money that is miraculously going to be used for the wall. it s not clear where the claim is coming from, but clearly, this is a white house trying to find a way out of this problem and by friday we will either have a government shutdown or president trump will sign some sort of short term bill to fund the government until february. joining me now to discuss, democratic congressman of new jersey, chair of the bipartisan problem solvers caucus. thank you for coming on. i want to get right to it. mitch mcconnell just announced he is going to bring a continuing resolution for a vote later today that would fund the government through february 8. chuck schumer has said he is open to that right now. do you think a shutdown will be averted? i think this is good news. i think it is signaling that we
american consumers. american businesses had no markets. seen great disruptions with the trade wars that are happening s we hope they re on the down slide. what happened in argentina is a good thing, but what you see with the payouts, it s a symptom of a bad policy. here s what sticks out to me. it wasn t like farmers were doing a-okay before. many are farmers hit by this have been supportive of the president. i want to share our league vaughn hillyard on the road speaking to all different farmers. did it this summer speaking about the impact of farmers. listen to what a third generation farmer in iowa had to say. the president announced 48 hours ago $12 billion aid package. are you supportive of that? i m not as supportive as i would be reporter: why? i would be more supportive if we could sign a trade, a nafta trade deal with mexico today. better news for me than reporter: you don t want the government putting money into your account? farmers can do a better job

because it doesn t want to give in the advantages it now has. i think you ll find that both countries will keep talking, they ll see what they can agree to. i think trump is a bit restricted now because the american business community is telling him this tool he s using, tariffs, is not the right tool to try to change chinese behavior and it s hurting american business and our economy. i think that s why trump didn t push farther to try to get a more significant agreement. do you see him backing down? in effect, is he backing down the president here? i think there is some push back. i think he s backing down a bit. i m trying to be honest and direct. don t forget his mo is to bluster and then backs off. this new fta excuse me, new nafta agreement isn t much
a shutdown is a failure in terms of the function of government. no, i don t favor a government shutdown but neither do i favor a gun to my head to accept $5 billion for something he promised and then he promised mexico would pay for it. the other threat, of course, from this president is now on the nafta trade deal that the president has renegotiated, sort of nafta 2.0. and the president has now, in effect, said that he s taking the current nafta off the table to make congress choose between his newly negotiated deal and no deal at all which, of course, would have enormous economic consequences. how do the democrats react to that? we ll have to look at the fine print here, jim. my understanding, frankly, of what he has negotiated is it s more cosmetic than substantive. there are a couple of areas like dairy and content, domestic content, especially in the automotive sector, that have been changed. but other than that, most of
