It is estimated that there are 20,000 universities globally, South Africa has 26. There are a number of agencies which rank universities; The QS Survey, The Times Higher Education Survey and the Centre for World University Rankings (CWUR) to name a few. The CWUR grades universities on four factors without relying on surveys and university data submissions: quality of education (25%), alumni employment (25%), quality of faculty (10%), and research performance (40%). This year, 19,788 institutions were ranked, and those that placed at the top made the global 2,000 list. Nationally and regionally (South Africa and Africa respectively), this puts UKZN in fourth place. The Centre for World University Rankings - which publishes the largest academic rankings of global universities - is a leading consulting organisation providing policy advice, strategic insights and consulting services to governments and universities to improve educational and research outcomes. CWUR publishes authoritative global university rankings, known for objectivity, transparency and consistency, which are trusted by students, academics, university administrators and governments from around the world.

Outstanding achievement as UCLan accoladed in top 7 per cent of universities worldwide

Students and staff at the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) are today celebrating after being placed in the top seven per cent of universities in the world. The Center for World University Rankings (CWUR) gave the University the seal of approval in its latest edition of the CWUR’s ‘Global 2000 List’ - the largest academic study of global universities. The list, which features 19,788 institutions, saw UCLan being ranked in 71st place nationally and 1,282nd worldwide which places them in the top 6.8 per cent of universities worldwide. In a letter to the University, the CWUR President Dr Nadim Mahassen congratulated UCLan for an ‘outstanding achievement’.
