MUMBAI: Tributes poured in on Friday for popular Bollywood music composer Shravan Rathod, who died in a Mumbai hospital aged 66 after being diagnosed with Covid-19.
Rathod worked with fellow composer Nadeem Saifi to create some of Bollywood’s most enduring hits of the 1990s, with the duo winning multiple awards for their soundtracks during the decade.
He was hospitalised after contracting Covid-19 and died late on Thursday, his musician son Sanjeev Rathod told the Press Trust of India.
His death comes as India battles a vicious second wave of the pandemic, and on the heels of a particularly tragic period for Indian cinema, with the film industry losing many luminaries over the past year.
He created some of the most iconic hits of the 90s.

Even as Bollywood reels from the death of music composer Shravan Rathod, it is now emerging that days before testing positive for COVID-19, he had visited the controversial Kumbh Mela in the Indian state of Uttarakhand.
The news was confirmed by his son Saanjeev Rathod who spoke to the Indian Express from a hospital bed while recovering from the virus.
“We had never thought our family would have to go through such tough times, my father passed away, I am Covid positive and so is my mother. My brother is also positive and is in home isolation, but since our father has died, he is being allowed to do the final procedures to do last rites for our father,” Sanjeev told the Indian daily.

The veteran musician was diagnosed with Covid-19 recently and he had multiple medical problems. He was kept on ventilator support. Confirming the news, Dr Kirti Bhushan of Raheja Hospital said that the cause of death is cardiomyopathy with multiple organ failure due to Covid-19. Several Bollywood celebrities took to social media to pay tribute to the late composer.
