Next month will mark one year since George Floyd was killed by the white Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, who knelt on Floyd’s neck for over nine minutes while ignoring pleas from Floyd that he could not breathe. He was aided in this by three other officers. Floyd’s death sparked a national discussion about defunding the police. In the latest example of the backlash to this push, conservative Republican Senator Tom Cotton responded Tuesday to a CNN report on a rise in crime in 2020 by tweeting that the solution was to, quote, “lock them up,” and adding, quote, “We have a major under-incarceration problem in America. And it’s only getting worse,” Cotton said.

Chauvin is charged with second- and third-degree murder, as well as manslaughter, for killing George Floyd last May. Over the past three days, numerous members of the Minneapolis Police Department accused Chauvin of violating department policy by kneeling on Floyd’s neck for nine-and-a-half minutes, while ignoring pleas from Floyd that he could not breathe. Minneapolis Police Chief Arradondo testified against his officer in a rare move. Here, he’s being questioned by prosecutor Steve Schleicher.
