BERKLEY When Gil Matheus presented his hand-crafted scale model of a World War II biplane to pilot and fellow Berkley resident Mike Dupont, there was a lot more to the event than one would imagine.
Matheus, a 94-year-old U.S. Navy veteran who served in World War II, was rewarding Dupont for giving him a ride in the real-life version, Miss Sadie, a 1940 450hp P/W Steadman, from the Taunton Municipal Airport to Myricks Airport in Berkley six years ago.
It took Matheus four months to commemorate that memorable flight in Miss Sadie by building the model in his basement from poplar wood and other materials bought at Home Depot and Joann Fabric using his own detailed sketches of how it should look.
