the county republican chairman has stayed focused on his own turf and on the black school in town. but whatever choices pete gilbert made as he went along for whatever reasons he made them, his turf now has gotten much, much bigger. he s now challenging the right of this elizabeth city state student to run for city council. he says because montravius king is a student, he can t really live in elizabeth city so he can t run for office here. this challenge happened this month here at the county board of elections. actually it happened right here in this exact room. a lot of people said yeah. mr. gilbert does have some black supporters in the community, but this is still an issue triggering a lot of racial tension in the community. if i could, just, the way it played out over the better part of six or seven hours is mr. king and his attorney were here. mr. gilbert was there with his supporters. including mrs. myrick, a silent observer during the hearing. who s mrs. myrick? with

first time in handcuffs. get there. this individual, joseph, he had 11 prior arrests. 11 prior arrests? 11 prior arrests. it could range from possession of drugs to simple battery, to theft. a pretty good record we have on him. started as early as 1983. he was never convicted on the battery or theft charges but in the 1990s, he was convicted of six misdemeanors and one felony drug charge. after myreck s arrest, his truck is searched. cocaine. where detectives find cocaine. myrick is then brought in for questioning where he appears to admit that what he s done is wrong. do you have any kids? no, sir. i ve got nieces and nephews. how would you feel if somebody did this to them? honest answer. honest answer. i would kill them. then the investigator asks myreck about his use of cocaine. i ll tell it like it is. both times when i talked to her, i was under the influence. he seems to blame the cocaine
