Washington: Former US President Barack Obama, who supported Myanmar’s engagement with the military to promote democratic change, said on Monday (26 April) that he was “led by heart-wrenching violence” in a coup. Was used against civilians to retreat from power.
In a rare statement, Obama said he supported efforts by the Biden administration and like-minded countries to impose costs on Myanmar’s generals.
“After a decade of illegitimate and brutal independence of the military, more than a decade after independence, people have not attempted to accept it,” Obama said in a statement posted on Twitter.
“Myanmar’s neighbors must recognize that the murderous regime ruled by the people will only threaten instability, humanitarian crises and a failed state,” he said.
