YANGON, March 12 Myanmar’s military is likely committing “crimes against humanity” in its attempt to stay in power, a UN expert said yesterday, as the junta claimed that ousted civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi accepted illegal payments of cash and gold. At least 70 people have reportedly been “murdered” since the February 1 coup, said Thomas Andrews, the UN’s top expert on rights in Myanmar.

Some reports have claimed that 19 people have crossed over into India, while others have placed the number at 50. However, these have not yet been verified. Myanmar has been in a state of unrest since February 1, when the army seized power and detained elected government leader Aung San Suu Kyi and other leaders of her National League for Democracy. The NLD won a landslide election in November, but the military has claimed the vote was fraudulent. Protests have broken out against the military takeover, leading to several deaths

BANGKOK, Feb 25 The Myanmar junta’s foreign minister visited Thailand yesterday as regional powers tried to broker an end to three weeks of deadly unrest triggered by a military coup. The talks came as an anti-coup protester died in detention, a local rescue organisation said. Four others have been killed in the crackdown. Foreign minister Wunna Maung Lwin held talks with his counterparts from Thailand and Indonesia in what was the first known face-to-face meetings between a senior junta member and foreign government officials.
