Universal Credit payments will be tailored to individual claimants needs but they can also vary from month to month if income levels change. Generally, the more a person receives from external income, the less their payment will be.

Universal Credit advances can be claimed for by those who are in financial hardship while they re waiting for their first payment. These advances need to be paid back and claimants will see their future payments reduced until the debt is covered, something the Work and Pensions Committee recently addressed.

Universal Credit can be applied for by those who are on a low income or are out of work and who hit other eligibility criteria. Once a claim is put through, initial payments can take around five weeks to arrive.
Budgeting advances can also be claimed for by those who need help with emergency household costs such as replacing a broken cooker, getting a job or staying in work or funeral costs.
These advances must be paid back to the government and deductions will be made from Universal Credit payments until the debt is cleared.
The smallest amount that can be received from a budgeting advance is £100.
