Calls to prevent cyclists deaths on Habana training route

Premium Content Subscriber only Habana residents are concerned it will take a cyclist’s death to prompt what they say are necessary changes to roads along a popular training route. The 31.8km ‘Habana Loop’ covers a section of the Bruce Highway at North Mackay as well as Mackay-Habana Road, Farleigh-Habana Road, Sugarshed Road and Heaths Road. Habana resident Wendy Lindsay said she got a “fright” after a close call with a cyclist, only stopping her vehicle in the nick of time when she saw the rider’s small single light in the corner of her eye. Habana and District Progress Association president Palmina Rae said while the community knew it could not change the roads being part of the designated training circuit, it wanted them improved for both drivers’ and cyclists’ safety.

The cause of death was lung cancer that had been diagnosed seven months earlier. Stanley’s illness became known when he took leave of his usual afternoon radio shift at Cleveland’s 98.5 WNCX in late February and the station released a statement requesting prayers for his family.

But the 22 members of the Seaforth Men s Shed share camaraderie and an eagerness to learn from each others expertise.
