Asian American life on an Arkansas farm
“Minari,” a warmhearted, semiautobiographical film about an Asian American family, is playing at the M.V. Film Center. Directed by Lee Isaac Chung and set in the 1980s, it narrates the story of the Yi family, who move to Arkansas to start a farm. The film takes its name from the Korean plant that is equivalent to Japanese parsley or Chinese celery. It’s a hardy vegetable that thrives in many places.
Jacob Yi is played by Steve Yeun, who was profiled recently in the NY Times Magazine. As Jacob, he settles his wife Monica (Yeri Han), son David (Alan Kim), and daughter Anne (Noel Kate Cho) in a secondhand trailer on 50 acres of Arkansas farmland. Monica, who liked her former life in California, is not too happy about relocating to the middle of the country, even though land there is a lot cheaper. The film is filled with the kind of appealing and sometimes funny details that make up the Yis’ life

A heartbreaking tale of two lesbian lovers
“Two of Us,” a heartbreaking story of lesbian love, starts tomorrow, Friday, Feb. 5, virtually and at the M.V. Film Center. While their love might seem entirely acceptable in today’s world, it’s not so, considering the age, culture, and location of these two gay pensioners.
Lippo Meneghetti directed his first feature, shown at the 2019 Toronto Film Festival. It stars German actress Barbara Sukowa as Nina Dorn, and Martine Chevallier as Mado (Madeleine) Girard. Awardwinning Sukowa is known for her Rainer Werner Fassbinder and Margarethe von Trotta roles, and Chevallier for hers at the Comédie-Française.

Welcome to Disneyland for seniors
“Some Kind of Heaven” opened at the M.V. Film Center and virtually last week. This upbeat documentary is directed by awardwinning Lance Oppenheim, who grew up near its topic, the Florida retirement community called the Villages, and decided to investigate it cinematically. A suburban utopia in Central Florida for seniors 55 and older, the Villages is the largest such senior citizen colony in the U.S. With the goal of creating a “warm, beautiful, secure, and friendly community,” owner Harold Schwartz founded it in the mid-’80s, and the original 800 residents of the Villages have expanded to 130,000.
