[ muted ]. the aircraft was an mv-22 osprey, an aircraft that had been extensively used in iraq and afghanistan and in response to disasters like the earthquake in nepal. it flies like a plane but takes off and lands like a helicopter. in this case it was in helicopter mode attempting to land, along with two other ospreys, when it crashed and
u.s. secretary hagel pushed back at suggestions that there may be significant problems with with the planning of the raids. an immense amount of timing and research goes into each of these operations. fred, u.s. officials say that this mission ultimately failed not due to operational error but because that element of surprise was taken away. the mission extremely risky and urgent when u.s. intelligence shows american luke somers would be murdered by saturday morning. the president authorizes the rescue giving no hint to the drama about to play out. two v-22 osprey touchdown, some six miles from the compound where the hostages are held.
now, though, a navy ship is standing by this the area, an american navy ship ready to assist. a spokesman for the u.s. navy in south korea joins me now on the phone. what can you tell us, lieutenant, about the rescue effort right now? well, thank you, erin. thank you for having me. first, i wanted to express our thoughts for those passengers that passed away and also the missing passengers on the ferry. this is a terrible tragedy, and our hearts go out to those families. and is this at this point a rescue effort? do you think there are possibly still children alive? erin, what i can tell you is from the u.s. navy s standpoint, we have the u.s. bonhomme richard, which is an amphibious assault ship, and that ship has about 3,000 sailers and marines on board the uss bonhomme richard. we have the mv-22 osprey, which is a marine aircraft as well as
mv-22 osprey as well as search and rescue helicopters, mh-60 helicopter and we do have that ship does have the ability to provide small boats and divers on the scene if that was requested by the government. best information so far, do you believe that the 300 unaccounted for, is that still the number or do you think one of the reasons that south korea is not asking for your help because they have accounted for everybody? well, i don t think they have accounted for everybody yet. i think i want to say that the republic of korea has done a great job in their rescue efforts thus far. and they arrived on the scene quickly. and have been working tirelessly to locate the missing passengers so they re doing a superb job. and our forces that we ve been in touch with the on-scene commander and our forces are ready to support if requested. and we are in the vicinity of the area and prepared to support. what s the latest word on how much of the vessel is still
