MEERUT/AGRA/BAREILLY: Negotiating a maze of marked and unmarked graves, a group of mourners approached Babar Alam with a body.
He hurriedly led them towards the extreme north of the graveyard, off the beaten path, where a row of freshly dug graves were waiting. Alam asked them to choose anyone of them, and they did. A little while later, as the body was being lowered and one of the mourners was sobbing helplessly, an earthmover was busy digging more pits, nearby.
As secretary of Agra’s Panchkuian Kabristan, Alam says that he has never seen such a rush of bodies. It had prompted him to ask for an earthmover from the civic body.
