NPFL: Rivers United Back To Winning Ways, Rangers Hold MFM In Lagos

Austin Okon-Akpan     Rivers United have recorded their fourth win of the season with a 3-1 victory over Heartland Football Club at the Adokiye Amesiemeka Stadium on matchday 5. Losing to Wikki Tourists by a single goal in Bauchi last week Wednesday, the league leaders needed to bounce back, prove their current form is not a fluke and they did just that against Heartland. From the start of the game, the Pride of Rivers showed their desire for the win. As early as 15 minutes into the game, they were awarded a penalty when Heartland’s Pascal Eze handled the ball in the box. The admirable Godwin Aguda stepped up to the spot and scored.

Kwara United, MFM football club of Lagos, FC Ifeanyi Ubah, Nasarawa United and Jigawa Golden Stars recorded vital victories on the opening day of the new 2020/2021 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) season. League football in Nigeria has been paused since March 18th due to the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic. Action finally resumed today (Sunday) with clubs adhering to strict COVID-19 safety guidelines enforced by the Federal Ministry of Health and Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) which was a requirement for the return of league football.

Kwara win as NPFL resumes after nine-month break ’Tosin Oluwalowo The Nigeria Professional Football League returned to action for the first time after a nine-month break with matches in six venues across the country. The league had been on break after the 2019/20 season was suspended in March and subsequently cancelled in August following the outbreak of COVID-19. Kwara United recorded the week’s only away victory, defeating last season’s league leaders, Plateau United, 2-0 at the New Jos Stadium. The Afonja Warriors scored two quick second half goals through Jide Fatokun and Michael Ohanu in the 62nd and 67th minutes to snatch victory.
