Fishing in Lake Naivasha is becoming a hazardous venture due to constant attacks on fishermen by criminals.
Lake Naivasha Boat Owners Association chairman David Kilo said the gangsters who have been operating in the area for about a year have also been extorting the fishermen.
He decried rise in illegal fishing, warning that the sector could be set for a repeat of what happened in 2000 when it was slapped with an annual fishing ban.

Authorities in Nakuru County stormed Kihoto Estate on Monday night and seized several illegal nets and six fishing boats in a fight on illegal fishing in Lake Naivasha.
After the raid, youth protested and engaged anti-riot police officers in running battles, affecting flow of traffic on the Naivasha-Mai Mahiu road. The situation was contained.
Naivasha Deputy Commissioner Mutua Kisilu said: “We have towed the six boats to the area police station and recovered tonnes of nets despite opposition from the criminals involved.”

Several people were injured and boats damaged following a clash between fishermen and poachers around Lake Naivasha.
Following the incident, security officers announced a major crackdown against tens of illegal fishermen who invaded the lake in the last year.
This came as the fishermen raised concern over theft targeting their nets and catch by the gangs who have taken over the lake.
In the last couple of months, some gangs have taken over control of sections of the lake, fishing on breeding grounds and using undersize nets.

Irate members of the public have halted the completion of the Ksh3.3 billion railway line from Maai Mahiu Industrial Park to Longonot Town.
The incident is said to have been provoked by constant disputes involving the residents of Governor s Camp in Naivasha and China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC).
The angry residents blocked the construction of the 24-kilometre railway line after the Chinese contractor allegedly sealed off feeder roads to their homes.
