At things like artifacts, serial culture, paintings, fine arts, decorative arts, the white house has all of those things as well. If you are into politics, policy obviously, that is the big one people think about. Even in terms of pop culture, or political culture, understanding the white house is a symbol for american democracy. And how that symbol has changed and evolved over time. It says a lot about who we are, the american identity itself, and i think all of these different ways of studying the white house touches on all of these Different Things that you may not get in a traditional American History textbook. But if you dig deeper, there is an incredible history beneath the surface. Lindsay chervinsky, a white house historian and new in the role there, we will spend time with both of you learning about your work and about the association. It is my privilege to welcome many of you back to the historic Decatur House and the White House Historical association for another one of our wonderful lectures. Tonight is one of the annual National Heritage lectures that we do in partnership with the u. S. Capitol Historical Society and the u. S. Supreme court Historical Society, and we have our wonderful colleagues from both tonight, and we would like to welcome you here today. On june 4, 1919, the 19th amendment was passed and sent to the states for ratification. The silver just used the white house as a backdrop to challenge inequity and bring attention to their cause. Tonight, we look forward to hearing more about their successful efforts to secure womens right to vote. applause welcome good evening. I am rob fisher, the director of st. Johns church. I am thrilled that our friends at the White House Historical association asked us to provide space for tonights conversation. Stewart asked if i would share a little bit about the history of this very historic room that you are sitting in tonight and so i will share with you that this church was completed in 1816. The architect was Benjamin Henri literal. Not only did he design this church but he was working on rebuilding the white house after it was destroyed in the war of 1812. In 1818 in 1818, he built what is now the home of the historical association. You see a similar entrance. It was built as a green cross and was an even four sides. In 1822, they expanded the Church Building to make room for more seating. We do not know who the architect was who did that expansion and built the bell power belltower. Tragically, he had already died at that time, in new orleans. There might be some historians in the
