Each week American History tvs american artifacts visits museums and historic places. The Vietnam Veterans memorial has 400,000 items left since it was opened in 1982. They are stored in these blue boxes. We visit the National Park Service Resource center to examine items left at the wall. Hi. My name is janet donlon. I work specifically for the Vietnam Veterans memorial collection housed here in the museum Resource Center and landover, maryland. The building is a facility for the National Capital region parks. Our collection specifically is housed entirely in this building. We are a collection of objects that are left at the memorial, the Vietnam Veterans memorial. People come by the memorial every day and leave objects at the memorial which our park rangers collect. Every two weeks or so we do a pickup. Thing 22 different times. In high school when you have to be in class eight hours a day and you want to be in a sport and you get home at 8 00 and you terry the democrats would have been elected. Kent state would not have happened. Ellsberg would i have faced 105 years in jail. A whole lot of other history would be different if this war had been stopped, not to mention the thousands and millions of lives that were killed after 1967. It is a shame 14,000 u. S. Ondiers died in 1967, when 58,000. Went on to this war could have been over and history could have been seriously changed. We remember 1967 for that. Panels one and two talk about the context and digitization of the Antiwar Movement that could have made a lot of this dihi different had that happen. The next number is 50. Here we are 50 years later, and art has the summer of love on its culture. This is a change. Npr on july 1 said if you are member this, you werent there. And let me just leave you my definition of leadership as i think about stewart udall. Leadership demonstrates an unwavering philosophical underpinning of service to others. Anchored in humility, courage, humanity, and gratitude. And if you were to take a look at those whom we have honored as a people in your National Park system, theres a lesson there. There are those who have given of themselves, who have given of themselves, that in the end as the people of the nation, those are whom we honor most of all. Its interesting. Just take a look at those individuals by name. Those have been of service to others. That is the american legacy. To honor those who have given to others. Lastly, before we open it up to questions, on this centennial. Yes, august 25th is a big day. And i know you historians like to traffic in facts. So contrary to popular belief, i was not there for the signing of that act in 1916. Ive been around a long time but not that long. With respect to the centennial and the
