The Congress of South African Students (Cosas) has threatened to shut down both private and public schools which do not comply with Covid-19 regulations.

Cosas Gauteng Provincial Coordinator Musa Shabangu says the student organisation will on Monday hold a meeting with the South African Democratic Teachers Union (Sadtu) and other stakeholders ahead of the reopening of schools in two weeks’ time.
“We will be going to private schools in terms of checking school readiness, but should it be a point to find a private school, including a public school, that would not be meeting the requirements that are set by the government that include sanitisers and PPEs.

Comments Cosas members protested outside Charterhouse yesterday after claims that the school was operating despite the lockdown regulations.
COSAS is looking for private schools that are operating in spite of the call by government to delay the reopening to next month.
On Monday, Cosas members protested outside Charterhouse Private School in Roodepoort, west of Joburg, after it was found that it had allegedly resumed the 2021 academic year.

“Cosas is in support of the ANC Youth League, and we came to the school because it was not adhering to government regulations.”

The Congress of South African Students (COSAS) has called on the Basic Education Department to delay the opening of public schools for the 2021 academic year.

South African learners are scheduled to return to the classrooms on January 27, but Cosas says schools are not ready to welcome learners while the second wave of Covid-19 is sweeping through the country.
Cosas Gauteng organiser, Musa Shabangu, says they are proposing that the opening of public schools be pushed back by two weeks.
Our stance currently is that the department needs to first ensure that all schools meet the regulations so that young schools are not subjected to hot spots of Covid-19 in the school environment.
