Report: World s population of developers expands, JavaScript reigns, C# overtakes PHP

Pandemic making permanent changes to developer remote working Tim Anderson Mon 26 Apr 2021 // 12:23 UTC Share Copy The world has more developers than ever, a new SlashData survey has reported - with 1.4 million more JavaScript developers than six months ago - and developer work patterns have been permanently altered by the COVID-19 pandemic. SlashData s six-monthly State of the Developer Nation report is based on a survey of over 19,000 developers combined with the researchers estimate of the global number of active software developers. This number, they believe, has increased from 21.3 million in October 2020 to 24.3 million today, an increase of around 14 per cent. The first estimate of the number of developers was published by Slashdata in mid-2017, when it reckoned there were 15 million globally, of which 11 million were professionals. Microsoft announces Visual Studio 2022, now in a 64-bit flavor

Apr 19, 2021 12:00 EDT with 23 comments Today, Microsoft announced Visual Studio 2022 along with its first public preview coming this summer. The next major release of Microsoft s flagship development toolkit will be faster, more approachable, and more lightweight , according to Amanda Silver, who made the announcement on Microsoft s DevBlogs. One of the big news with Visual Studio 2022 is going to be the transition to a 64-bit app. Indeed, Microsoft has been making a push towards 64-bit across the board, and now Visual Studio is joining the fray. A major advantage of 64-bit apps is that they re not limited to 4GB of memory, so this new release will have unrestricted access to all the memory on your PC. That should result in much better performance across the board and fewer out-of-memory errors.

So how s NET 6 coming along? Oh wow, Microsoft s multi-platform framework now includes Windows

BlazorWebView arrives on desktop applications. Too convoluted? Tim Anderson Tue 13 Apr 2021 // 08:30 UTC Share Copy Microsoft has shipped preview 3 of its forthcoming .NET 6 framework with a bunch of updates including the addition of Windows desktop to its Multi-platform App UI (MAUI). As the first long-term support version of the supposedly unified framework, .NET 6.0 is expected to be completed in November. Like .NET 5.0, it is no longer designated .NET Core, though it remains distinct from the Windows-only .NET Framework, which is still supported but will not be further developed. .NET 6.0 has added Android, iOS, Mac and Windows ARM64 to the list of supported platforms, with mobile and Mac GUI support coming from the integration of Xamarin Forms. Although .NET 5.0 was released in November 2020, its short supported life means that .NET 6.0 may prove the more important release.
