Nairobi slums to have walkways, cycle lanes, says Kura

THE STANDARD By Josphat Thiongó | February 17th 2021 at 00:00:00 GMT +0300 The second slum upgrading project that will construct 440km road network to cover 11 Nairobi slums kicked-off in Kibera s Sarang ombe ward, Maranatha area. [Jonah Onyango, Standard] Roads in Nairobi s informal settlements will soon have walkways and cycle lanes, Kenya Urban Roads Authority (Kura) has announced. The authority says walkways and cycle lanes are an essential part of the ongoing construction of 408km of access roads across the capital s informal settlements. Kura said yesterday that 22km of access roads under the Sh5.8 billion project had already been completed. Kura Director-General Silas Kinoti said the model for the planned walkways and cycle lanes in slums borrows from the non-motorised transport corridors project being implemented by Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) in the city s Central Business District.

[Courtesy, Standard] Kenya posted back-to-back negative growth in the second and third quarters. The latest data from the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) showed that the economy contracted by 1.1 per cent between July and September 2020. This, however, was a slightly better performance than the previous quarter (April-June) when it shrunk by a revised 5.5 per cent. In the third quarter of 2019, the economy grew by 5.8 per cent. The numbers have come months late, owing to coronavirus disruptions, according to KNBS.

In hindsight now, Kenyans were underestimating the disruptive power of the pandemic whose impact they had yet to fully comprehend. As the Ministry of Education grappled with unworkable school reopening dates in subsequent months when Covid-19 infections spiked, it became clear that pupils and students were in real danger of losing out on an academic year.

A year defined by hope then grief and huge losses

THE STANDARD By Daniel Wesangula | January 1st 2021 at 00:00:00 GMT +0300 Zachary Murimi, a Form Four leaver, lifts a job placard along Mombasa Road in Nairobi, on Thursday, October 01 2020 as he pleads with well-wishers to offer him any available job opportunity. [David Njaaga, Standard] While everyone else was making plans to have a great 2020, a pandemic introduced itself to the world. First, it announced its presence in the Chinese province of Wuhan before going global, touching every continent, except Antarctica; touching almost every nation and almost every neighbourhood. The results have been the devastation of the global economy and human relations. While there are people or industries that have remained untouched, millions have been negatively affected by the consequences of a pandemic.
