obstructed justice or did anything for the charges. it might actually undermine mr. mueller s case. exactly. i mean, look, there is no smoking gun in this book. if there were, we would have read about it across the top of the new york times and the washington post . all it is, is a personal complaint about donald trump. nonetheless, james comey is doing interviews on every media outlet in this country, and, you know, trump is in a blood war with the mainstream media. we know that. and they are now setting up mueller as his primary opponent for the moment. and the game is entirely political, paul. it is to undermine the president, push down on his approval rating using james comey as the cat s paw. but there s really not much more there paul: there are a lot of unflattering anecdotes. i haven t finished it yet, but really a lot of the behavior that he says about trump you would say that s not presidential.
learned here from the book about the comey relationship with trump? no, i think we re learning that director comey hated donald trump as much as donald trump seems to hate directer comey paul: let s take out the seems. [laughter] right. it just seems donald trump doesn t leave a lot of doubt paul: yeah, slime ball? however, the substance of the note, i think, is true. about lying to congress when he told congress i didn t make my decision on indicting hillary inform after we interviewed hillary clinton, and you see he drafted a statement before, i mean, normal discourse i don t like to call people liars, but normal discourse you d say there s a truth issue here. paul: but is there anything here we re learning that could assist the case, say, of robert mueller. i don t know, because i don t think mr. comey wants to take responsibility for that. i think he took responsibility for getting mr. mueller appointed, but i don t think he wants to say donald trump
questions, why was mueller appointed, what is mueller looking at, much of it including the president s own political problems outside of mueller come back to things he did himself. and were not existential things that came ot him. can t put it better. michael, heidi, chuck and paul, coming up today the white house press secretary said they believe at the white house the president has the power to fire robert mueller who is prosecuting him. what happens if trump does it? what do republican dozen then? they say mueller s not in danger but trump is clearly thinking about firing him pep thought about doing it in december and even close allies are warning the president not to do it. who is going to stop trump now? john kelly? give me a break. plus the raid on trump s attorney s office comes as the president is considering a military strike on syria. that could come as early as tonight. as trump decides what to do in syria, he s dealing with more staff exis and investigation hanging right
terms of the president someday sitting there with robert mueller, there are a lot of people sitting around him, his informal kitchen cabinet, when he retreats to the white house and calls around, almost to a person no one thinks that s a good idea. i have one more word. gene says you shouldn t fight the fbi and that s probably true. look, he fired comey, what, seven months ago? it didn t work out great for him. it got mueller appointed but in terms of public support, trump s about where he was seven months ago. support among house republicans probably stronger. so we keep saying he ll pay a price, he can t do this, he can t do that. he s done pretty well so far with a very weak hand. the weak hand being the facts, not that he s not the smartest, but with a very weak hand he s fighting back and i worry he can keep on doing it for quite a while. let me ask you a question about paul ryan. obviously a guy we ve known for a very long time, guy we ve both
on robert mueller s team at the special counsel s office left the team under mysterious circumstances. now, peter strzok was a big deal, chief of the fbi s counter espionage section. and when mueller appointed special counsel he recruited strzok to help lead the special counsel s probe into russian meddling. and just weeks after mueller recruited him to the special counsel s office, strzok mysteriously gone and he wasn t just gone back to counter espionage. he was gone to human resources. and no disrespect to our brilliant friends in hr who i am not disrespecting by saying this, but i don t think that was his first choice. so what happened? why did peter strzok leave the mueller investigation and get busted down to hr instead? well, this weekend we got our answer. the new york times reporting this mueller had removed strzok from his team, quote, after the justice department s inspector general started to examine
