Khela Hobe (Game On)’, a slogan coined by Trinamool Congress leader Debangshu Bhattacharya, is currently a rage at the ruling party’s rallies with leaders and workers freely invoking it. The slogan suggests a sportsman-like challenge, ‘let the best side win’. But for voters, it has much more darker connotations.
Elections in West Bengal have rarely been peaceful. Poll campaigns in the state have stayed true to its track record, topping in violence and human casualties. Of the 16 persons killed in violence during the 2014 Lok Sabha election, seven were from Bengal. In the 2018 panchayat polls which had no candidates from the opposition in as many as 34% seats there were saw six casualties and 43 severely injured. In the 2019 general election, three persons were killed and 337 incidents of major violence were reported. Violence has peaked since then with a total of 47 people
