UPDATE 2-Jordan s king says diplomacy under way to halt Israel s military campaign Reuters 3 hrs ago
By Suleiman Al-Khalidi
AMMAN, May 16 (Reuters) - Jordan s King Abdullah said on Sunday that his kingdom was involved in intensive diplomacy to halt what he characterized as an Israeli military escalation in the worst Israeli-Palestinian violence in years.
The monarch, whose ruling family has custodianship of Muslim and Christian sites in Jerusalem, did not elaborate on the diplomacy, which was communicated via a news flash on state media.
Jordanian government officials have told Reuters the pro-Western kingdom is leading a diplomatic campaign with its European and U.S. allies to put pressure on Israel to end its air and artillery barrage on Gaza since fighting erupted last Monday.

Israel will send extensive medical aid to Jordan on Tuesday to help it deal with the spread of the coronavirus in its midst. The aid is being sent in response to a Jordanian request and reflects an Israeli effort to ease tensions with its eastern neighbor.
The package is expected to include hundreds of ventilators, coronavirus test kits, medical face masks and ordinary face masks. But it apparently won’t include any coronavirus vaccines.
Jordan’s request was sent through the defense establishment and approved by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the National Security Council and the Health Ministry.

Jordan’s neighbors and allies, including the U.S. and Israel, reacted with statements of support after the Jordanian military said that King Abdullah’s half-brother and former Crown Prince Hamza bin Hussein had been told to halt actions used to target the country’s “security and stability.”
In a statement published by the state news agency, it said the action was part of a broader security investigation in which a former minister, a member of the royal family and some other unidentified individuals were detained.
