there. santos it has not have to resign. i think kevin mccarthy will say, as he has said, i won t support him for reelection, but let the process play out. mccarthy is saying that because he needs santos as much as santos needs mccarthy right now. eugene, i want to ask you, you ve covered this story before in different contexts. this idea of a potential government shutdown of the debt ceiling. i think a lot of times when i talk to voters and they are, like yeah, i have seen this before. i ve seen this before. i wonder if in your sense doing the reporting in washington on the hill that this is like before, or the contours of this feel fundamentally different to you. i think where the voters are concerned is very similar. but the contours does feel different this time. when you talk to people who were around in doing the negotiations in 2011 when there wasn t a default, but there was indeed a credit downgrade, they say this feels even scarier
i think we will be able to do it. that was president biden speaking just moments ago saying he s optimistic about reaching a deal with republicans to raise the debt ceiling. the clock is ticking. the deadline to raise the debt ceiling and avoid a first ever default on u.s. debt is june 1st. look at that calendar. between now and then there will only be four days where both chambers of congress are in session at the same time. which further narrows the window for quick, decisive action. president biden expected to meet with congressional leaders of both parties this week to hammer out a deal. economists outlining the dire consequences if our government fails to raise the debt ceiling. the country would default on his existing debt, could no longer borrow money to fund the government. i would trigger a recession and financial instability, not just for this country but around the world. former florida representative david jolly, eugene daniels back with us. eugene, where are we on this
