AN ITINERANT serial shoplifter who stole meat to feed himself and fund his drug habit, was told jail was considered. James Martin Smith, of no fixed address, admitted shoplifting meat, worth £36.67, from the Co-op in High Street, Shanklin, on April 18. Smith, 37, walked up to the meat counter, selected all of the steak on display, plus a whole chicken, and put them in a carrier bag leaving the store without any attempt to pay for the goods, said Ann Smout, prosecuting, at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court. None of the items were recovered. Smith was recognised as a persistent shoplifter on CCTV.

A MAN has been sentenced after causing more than £8,000 of damage to a room at his accommodation. Scott Thick, 24, now of Carter Street, Sandown, admitted causing criminal damage at Fellowship House last August, Calverts Hotel in January, and to a police cell while he was placed in custody. He re-appeared in front of Island magistrates on April 12, where he was given a 12-month community order, to include 20 rehabilitation days. He must also pay compensation of £250. At the previous court appearance, prosecutor, Ann Smout, said Thick had been seen by a staff member to cause damage to Fellowship House, after he had woken up and reported he had a dislocated shoulder.

Disqualified East Cowes driver refused to give breath sample

A DISQUALIFIED driver who refused to provide a breath sample, both at the roadside and at the police station, has been sentenced. Matthew Rawson, 34, of Britannia Way, East Cowes, appeared before the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court on Tuesday. He admitted driving while disqualified, using a car without insurance, and driving without due care and attention. He also admitted failing to provide a specimen for analysis. Prosecutor, Ann Smout, said on December 18, police had been on patrol in Newport when their attention was drawn to a black Nissan. She said the driver, Rawson, had pulled across Medina Way in front of the unmarked police vehicle.
