The Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation under Betta Edu in November 2023 approved funds for flight tickets and airport taxis for the minister’s teams from Abuja to Kogi State, even though the latter has no airport.  Documents obtained by SaharaReporters show how the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) moved N226,188,500 million to Kogi, Bayelsa and Imo states through the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation ahead of the November 11, 2023 governorship elections.

A Nigerian-American professor, Farooq Kperogi, has called on President Bola Tinubu to sack the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr Betta Edu, over her alleged involvement in corruption scandal.  SaharaReporters on Friday reported that Edu, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, asked the Accountant General of the Federation, Mrs Oluwatoyin Sakirat Madein to send public funds to a private account.  The private account belongs to Oniyelu Bridget Mojisola, identified as a project manager by the minister.

Dr Betta Edu, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, has confirmed that she made a request to the Accountant General of the Federation, Mrs Oluwatoyin Sakirat Madein to send public funds to a private account, as contained in a letter obtained by SaharaReporters.  Speaking on the incident, the Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to the Minister, Rasheed Zubair said the N585.198million payment for the vulnerable group followed due process.

Accountant-General Of Federation Confirms Inappropriate Memo From Humanitarian Minister, Betta Edu, Says OAGF Doesn t Make Payments For Projects

The Accountant General of the Federation (AGF), Dr Oluwatoyin Madein, has clarified that the OAGF does not make payments on behalf of Ministries, Departments and Agencies for projects and programmes implemented by the MDAs. The AGF who was reacting to a memo sent to the office by Dr Betta Edu, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, said the AGF failed to make the said payment and rather advised the minister on the appropriate steps to go about it.
