Locals remember meeting EastEnders star Barbara Windsor when she owned The Plough, in Winchmore Hill

National treasure Dame Barbara Windsor is perhaps best known for her role as Peggy Mitchell, the Queen Vic’s battle-axe landlady in EastEnders. But the actress was also a landlady in real life, owning and running The Plough, in Winchmore Hill, near Amersham, for a number of years. And those who knew or met her spoke of her warmth and down-to-earth nature. Donna Randall, from Chalfont St Peter, met the star at the pub in the 1980s when she joined her husband and his work colleagues for an impromptu Christmas lunch.
