An awkward moment happened at the last meeting of Peebles Community Council. Stock image by Ivan Aleksic on Unsplash AN AWKWARD moment happened at a recent public meeting involving the leader of Scottish Borders Council (SBC). When a member of the public joined the last Peebles Community Council meeting to complain about the state of certain properties in the town, one of the places she listed is the home of Shona Haslam – who was present at the online gathering. Rosie Barley mentioned the former court building without knowing it is owned by Mrs Haslam, a Conservative councillor for Tweeddale East and the leader of SBC.

Hustings report: Midlothian South, Tweeddale and Lauderdale

The event, held over Zoom, was organised by environmental group Tweedgreen and the Tweeddale Peace Group. The candidates were Dominic Ashmole for the Scottish Green Party, Shona Haslam for the Scottish Conservatives, Christine Grahame for the SNP, Katherine Sangster for Scottish Labour and AC May for the Scottish Liberal Democrats. Questions from members of the public were on topics including nuclear weapons, agriculture diversification, gas and oil exploration, and the coronavirus vaccine. The chairwoman, Lesley Morrison, said: “Speaking on behalf of Tweedgreen and the Tweeddale Peace Group, what occurs to me is there is a certain lack of urgency coming from some of the candidates’ responses to some of the questions.”

Peebles cycle lanes idea debated at town s community council

PROPOSALS to introduce cycle lanes in a Borders town were criticised at a community council meeting last week. Scottish Borders Council (SBC) came under fire from Peebles Community Council chairman Les Turnbull, who said members of the public are effectively being pushed to complete a public consultation with very little time to consider their views. Community council member Malcolm Bruce added: “The whole thing is an utter abomination of a plan.” It was revealed that the proposals are part of the funding from the Scottish Government’s ‘Spaces for People’ scheme to make Peebles’ High Street a more appealing place to walk and cycle – but the cash needs to be spent by the end of May.
