The Accra Regional Police Command on Tuesday, January 19, arrested 97 people for alleged non-compliance with the mandatory wearing of face masks.
The arrested people comprised 60 males and 37 females whom the police said had failed to wear face masks while going about their businesses in public places in Accra’s central business district.
Operation
The Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Accra Regional Police Command, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Mrs Effia Tenge, who briefed the Daily Graphic, said the suspects were apprehended in a special operation aimed at enforcing the wearing of face masks, as directed by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
A policeman has been arrested together with three others, including a small-scale miner for allegedly selling fake gold to an American at Dzorwulu in Accra.
The policeman, Constable Bernard Nubin, who is with the Israel Police Station under the Achimota Mile Seven District Police Command, was arrested along with Kwabena Ofori and Joshua Boateng and a man identified only as Kueey, the small-scale miner from Akwatia in the Eastern Region after they had received a partial payment of $20,000 from the American.
An accomplice, who is yet to be identified, is currently on the run.

Serbia’s Honorary Consul to Ghana, Mr Steve Mawuenyega, has been found dead in a room in a house near the American Embassy in Accra.
He was 63 years old.
Until his death, Mr Mawuenyega was also a member of the General Assembly of the Honorary Consular Corps of Ghana (HCCGH) and was also in charge of relations between Serbia and the government of Ghana.
Police report
The Public Relations Officer at the Accra Regional Police Command, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Mrs Effia Tenge, confirmed the incident to the Daily Graphic.
She said the late Mawuenyega’s daughter reported the death of her father to the Cantonments Police at about 1 a.m. yesterday.

A 43-year-old man has died while in the custody of the Mile Seven Police in the Greater Accra Region, barely 24 hours after his arrest.
The deceased, Daniel Omari Aboagye, was being held by the police for allegedly defrauding by false pretence.
Police confirmation
The Public Relations Officer of the Accra Regional Police Command, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Mrs Effia Tenge, confirmed the incident and said Aboagye died around 1:30 a.m. yesterday.
She said Aboagye, who was arrested last Monday, reported sick a few hours after he was brought to the police station.
