No 4: Natal Mahogany (Trichilia emetica)
The Natal Mahogany has an unmistakably subtropical aura around it. It speaks of Lowveld heat and humidity, and warm summer rain. Perhaps it’s because of the lush, deep green, wide-spreading crown, so evident in our town’s prime specimen on the traffic island at the intersection of Berg River Boulevard and Market Street. Perhaps it’s the lure of the dense shade, reputedly one of the densest of all indigenous trees, on a scorching midsummer’s day. Whatever the case, it is not surprising to learn that the tree’s natural habitat extends from Mpumalanga’s Lowveld northward and eastward into Zimbabwe and Mozambique and southward to kwaZulu-Natal.
OVERVIEW GLOBAL TOMATO MARKET
In the Netherlands and Belgium, the unlighted tomato production is underway. Around Easter, prices were still at a high level, but increasing volumes may start to put pressure on the market. Italy also had a good week. There has been a great demand for tomatoes, especially from Germany. The Spanish season is coming to a close within 6 weeks and, in general, prices have been on the low side. South Africa is dealing with shortages due to the impact of heavy rains and Mexico doesn t yet have great volumes available either.
