The Shabbiness of Beauty, resonances between both photographers’ work point to their shared love of transitory beauty
In a new book,
the
artist Moyra Davey interposes her own photographs, both recent and decades-old, with those of the photographer Peter Hujar. There are a surprising number of harmonies: intimate portraits set against blank interiors; an interest in the surface of, and movement across, bodies of water; pictures of isolated body parts. Both artists capture an empty Manhattan, photograph lone high heels, and are drawn to handsome, pensive punks, as well as other forms of life – including horses, dogs and chickens.

MACK, the artist and writer Moyra Davey places her work in conversation with that of the photographer Peter Hujar. Before becoming a book, the project appeared as an exhibition at Berlin’s Galerie Buchholz in spring 2020. Thousands of miles away, confined to their New York City apartment, Eileen Myles printed out Davey’s and Hujar’s photographs and mounted their own private rendition of the show.
