The $1.6 billion project replacing Manhattan s cramped and dark Penn Station with a light-filled train hall is set for completion this week, with the first trains rolling out on New Year s Day. The new 255,000-square-foot station is named after U.S. Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan, a Democrat who championed the project and died in 2003. (AP Photo/Seth Wenig) APAP

The eminent architecture historian, Vincent Scully, once lamented the loss of the granite masterpiece known as the original Penn Station by condemning the fetid dungeon that replaced it on 34th St. and 8th Ave.
First, the good news: People who arrive to New York by intercity rail no longer experience the city like rats.
Beyond that, it’s difficult to say that taxpayers are exceptionally well served by $1.6 billion they just spent to convert a portion of the James A. Farley Building from postal service into an arrivals and departure hall for Amtrak and some Long Island Rail Road passengers.
For decades since the demolition of the original Pennsylvania Station, of course, those passengers were poorly served by that epochal building’s ne’er-do-well replacement: a series of rabbit warrens under Madison Square Garden that felt as if they were being crushed by the arena itself.
This significant project transformed a century-old building into a modern gateway that expands Penn Station and significantly enhances the traveler experience,
said Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul. The Moynihan Train Hall stands as a beacon of progress in memory of the late Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan, who I was proud to work for and who helped lead our country forward. This world-class development is a testament to our commitment to build back better, improve our infrastructure and strengthen our economy now and in the post-pandemic future.
The train hall s stunning design is a unique blend of classical and contemporary, and features a one-acre sky-lit atrium, a signature clock, cutting-edge technology, clear wayfinding, full accessibility, and museum-caliber public art. It also provides immediate benefits at this critical time while profoundly enhancing the convenience, health, and daily experience of hundreds of thousands of passengers, neighbors, and visitors. T
