Moviment Graffitti calls out institutional racism in sentencing of migrants Following recent six-month sentence for forged travel documents, Graffitti calls for end “cruel” system and for more humane approach towards migration offences 30 July 2021, 11:11am by Luke Vella Graffitti called for a more humane and just application of punishment towards the vulnerable.  Graffiti said that although the Malta Immigration Act does provide for a six month to two-year sentenced for such acts, community based sanctions are permissible under the Probation Act.  “This discriminatory use of sentencing towards migrants and asylum seekers demonstrates that the criminal courts are being deliberately over punitive towards the most vulnerable. “

Attard residents, NGOs protest as 70-year-old trees are uprooted

Infrastructure Malta has gone ahead with the uprooting of old trees in Triq in-Nutar Żarb, Attard, despite protests by residents and environmentalists who claimed they have 30 days to contest the permit. Workers turned up at the site early in the morning and started preparing to pull down the 70-year-old ficus trees, removing branches and loading them onto a truck. But nearby residents and members of environment and civil society groups such as Graffitti protested and demanded a copy of the permit. The permit, by the Environment Authority, was issued two days ago.

The Ministry expresses its condolences to the families of the victims, including civilian casualties and recalls the right of the Palestinians not to be deprived of their homes in East Jerusalem. Malta reiterates its full support to a two-state solution in the Middle East, the ministry said.
