SPRINGFIELD With multiple recent crashes involving Illinois State Police (ISP) Troopers, Governor JB Pritzker and ISP Director Brendan F. Kelly implores motorists to respect the Move Over Law and use caution when approaching emergency vehicles on interstates and roads.
In the past three days, six ISP squad cars have been struck due to motorists disobeying the Move Over Law (also known as Scott’s Law), bringing the year-to-date total to 10 in 2021. Three of these recent incidents resulted in injuries, including one serious injury. These incidents occurred across the state in ISP District(s) 2, 5, 13, 16 and Chicago.
“Scott’s Law is critical to keeping our first responders safe as they heroically serve us on our roadways,” said Governor JB Pritzker. “Especially now, as we continue to experience extreme winter weather, it is imperative that drivers slow down and move over as they approach a vehicle with their hazard lights on. Illinois’ first annual Move Over Report says state policies should be strengthened to better protect first responders and travelers who have parked off the side of the roadway.
Created by Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker in 2019, the Move Over Task Force released their first report not only analyzing the state’s instances of violators but with suggestions for changes to the state’s policies that could stem accidents.
“It really is about ‘right here and now, what can we do to prevent one of these tragedies from occurring’ because it’s a human being out there on the side of the road,” said Sgt. Christopher Watson with the Illinois State Police.

The Move Over Task Force was formed by Illinois Governor JB Pritzker in 2019 after two roadside deaths of Illinois State Police Troopers. The crashes were the result of motorists’ failure to comply with the Move Over law.
