this week, celebrities lake gary sinese and dennis miller are joining together to raise money for our troops. they re taking part in a live broadcast put on by the nonprofit group move america forward. the first two raised more than $2 million and allowed them to send care packages and to sponsor trips to iraq for parents of u.s. soldiers killed in the war. her son was the first navy seal killed in iraq and joins us live from phoenix. debbie, welcome. thank you. would you please tell us a little bit about mark and how much it meant to you to go to iraq and see where he had served. you bet. mark was the first navy seal killed in iraq on august 2, 2006 and that young man willingly stood out in the direct line of fire three times that day on purpose to save his buddies.
they had been in the most intense battle in iraq. it was a two-hour battle that had gone on. this was actually my second trip over to iraq. and the first time when i went, it was december so the temperatures were a lot cooler but i got to experience that extreme heat and the day he died, it was 120 degrees. and he carried the big gun. so he carried anywhere from 150 to 180 pounds in addition to his own weight. and i can t even begin to imagine what that would be like to be in a two-hour battle carrying that kind of weight in that intense heat. but he was a young man who valued other people s lives more important than his own. and he made the choice to give us his life so that others could live and i m so, so very proud of that young man and i founded america s mighty warriors in response to his last letter home. but it s not just about mark. it s about so many others that serve. and i ve worked with move america forward over the last 3 1/2 years so we can do that very thing. make sure
