Jill Hunkler of Barnesville testified before the U.S. House Subcommittee on the Environment on Thursday Earth Day 2021 opposing government subsidies to the natural gas and oil industry. Her appearance was virtual, using an online platform rather than an in-person visit to Washington. Also speaking were representatives of Harvard University and Stockholm Environmental Institute’s Climate Policy Program, along with Swedish youth activist Greta Thunberg, who is known around the world for her efforts. Hunkler has long opposed the fossil fuel industry and hydraulic fracturing, or “fracking” a process that uses high-pressure water, sand and chemicals to fracture the bedrock and release gases trapped within it. Groups Oppose Monroe County Ethane Storage Facility in Online Forum | News, Sports, Jobs

For The Intelligencer Plans for a Mountaineer Natural Gas Liquids storage facility near the Ohio River in Monroe County are raising fears of pollution and long-term damage to the area and its people. A virtual meeting was held Thursday evening in which environmental groups shared information and comments, with the overall goal of telling the public to reach out to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources during a 30-day comment period that ends Feb. 6. PTT Global Chemical America has reached an agreement with Mountaineer NGL, which intends to use salt caverns to store liquid components of the local natural gas stream, such as ethane, underground. That ethane would serve as feedstock for a PTTGCA ethane cracker plant if it is built as proposed a few miles to the north. A final investment decision about the cracker has been postponed indefinitely due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Officials grilled about injection wells | News, Sports, Jobs

Staff Writer ST. CLAIRSVILLE Jill Hunkler of Barnesville spoke to the Belmont County Board of Commissioners on Wednesday, asking members to further oppose a plan to install two saltwater injection wells at the intersection of U.S. 40 and Ohio 331. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources issued permits late in 2020 to New Jersey-based Omni Energy Co. permitting the wells. Multiple local residents and officials have objected and raised a variety of concerns ranging from pollution to ground stability and increased truck traffic. There are several residences, businesses and county agencies in the surrounding area, along with the Belmont Correctional Institution state prison.
