<p>The US Department of Agriculture s National Agricultural Statistics Service has released an updated cattle inventory report. Roger Ott is director of the NASS Rocky Mountain Regional field office.<p><p>“At the US level, there was a total of 89 point 3 million cattle and calves in inventory on January 1 2023, which was down 3% from the previous year. Of that total, there was 28 point 9 million head of beef cow down 4% from a year ago, and 9.4 million milk cows which was up slightly from a year ago.<p>In addition, an updated sheep and goat inventory report is out. <p><p>“As of January 1, the US level for the goat inventory. There were 2.5 million all goats on hand, down 2%. Of that total, 2 million of those were meat and other goats, which was down 1% or 100,000 were milk goats, which was down 2% and 107,000, or Angora goats, which was down 3% from the prior year.”<p><p>Once again, that was Roger Ott.
