The high court in Johannesburg handed down its ruling today following an application to overturn the apartheid-era inquest that found Aggett committed suicide while in police custody.
The reopened inquest into the death of anti-apartheid activist Dr Neil Aggett in 1982 has found that he did not die by suicide, but was in fact killed by security police while in custody.
The trade unionist and doctor Neil Aggett did not die by suicide but by the hand of security branch cops, Judge Motsamai Makume ruled, calling the magistrate's findings from the original inquest 'a serious error of judgment' and his conclusions 'mind-blowing'.
